Welcome

My name is Mary Shandley, and this is my portfolio for Humanities 103-104!

The work posted in the tabs above is a compilation of my thoughts and writings from my first year in the Humanities program at Davidson College. Feel free to explore them in any order you would like, although it might be more helpful to read my definitions of revolution and the (H/h)umanities first.

Throughout the year, I have noticed several binaries and patterns of absolutism in the language we use to describe broad concepts. In my portfolio, I hope to challenge this habit and argue for the interweaving of rigidity and fluidity. I touch on multiple specific binaries or dichotomies that appear in academic and everyday language and discussed whether they can be dismantled or made more fluid.

I would like to thank the Humanities faculty, Fellows, and students for expanding my perspective this year. Never have I been surrounded by such intellectually energetic and profound individuals, and you have made me all the better for it.
